
GLOSSARY OF HERBS
Amla Berry / INFLAM AWAY, DIGEST WELL: Amla Berry, also referred to as Amla Fruit, (Emblica Fruit commonly known as Indian Gooseberry), is a commonly used herb in Ayurveda. A nutritious fruit native to India, its flavor is much like an apricot but a bit sour. Typically used to help combat inflammation and has excellent cooling properties. Amla Fruit has one of the highest antioxidant contents, contains excellent amounts of Vitamin C, and can help support digestive function.
Ashwagandha Root / STRESS LESS: Ashwagandha Root (Withania somnifera) is traditionally used to support and counter the effects of stress while helping support performance and endurance tolerance. Often called the “winter cherry” and “Indian Ginseng”, Ashwagandha is a member of the nightshade family. Ashwagandha supports and helps nourish and regulate the metabolic processes and is often referred to as a “grounding” herb. In Ayurveda, it is often used to support anxiety and stress relief, as well as to support positive moods.
Astragalus Root / IMMUNE YOU: Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceous), also known as huáng qí or milkvetch, is traditional Chinese medicine and is considered an adaptogen herb and as such, has several uses. Astragalus has excellent antioxidant benefits and is thought to impact the production of free radicals and is commonly used to support immune function and respiratory health.
Bilberry Leaf / IMMUNE YOU: The Bilberry plant, commonly known as huckleberry and whortleberry, is grown in moderate climates throughout Europe and Asia. Bilberry has strong antioxidant properties, is high in Vitamin C, and its health benefits include helping to support the reduction of inflammation. These antioxidants, called anthocyanosides, helps prevent free radical damage.
Black Pepper / DIGEST WELL: Black Pepper is a spicy herb and is one of the commonly used culinary ingredients in the world. In traditional herbal medicine, it is said to help support digestion, and as a diuretic, supports water balance. Black Pepper also contains antioxidants, which can help support the reduction of free radicals.
Cardamom Pod / DIGEST WELL: Cardamom is a warming herb and is a member of the ginger family. Cardamom besides its delicious flavor is used to support respiratory function as well as play a factor in supporting a healthy stomach and digestive system.
Chamomile Flower / STRESS LESS, DIGEST WELL, INFLAM AWAY: Chamomile Flower is from the daisy plant and is native to Europe and Asia. Chamomile has been used in support of anxiety, upset stomach, and diarrhea. The flower helps in balancing mood and thereby helping to relax.
Cinnamon Bark / STRESS LESS, IMMUNE YOU, DIGEST WELL, INFLAM AWAY: Cinnamon Bark (Ceylon Cinnamon – Cinnamomum Verum) is grown primarily in Sri Lanka. Cinnamon has been used for thousands of years in cooking and in traditional medicine and has a sweet, pungent aroma. It has been promoted to invigorate and support the respiratory and digestive system, as well as help, promote circulation to the joints as well as help support your body’s immune response.
Clove Bud / DIGEST WELL, INFLAM AWAY: Clove Buds consist of an unusually high content of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and essential oils. They are part of the Myrtle family and have a long history in Asian herbal traditions. In traditional medicine, Cloves have been used to help support circulation, digestion as well as the reduction of inflammation.
Echinacea Root / IMMUNE YOU: Echinacea is used by herbalists today to help support the body’s immune system. Often used for the common cold, inflammation, and migraines. Elderberry Berry / IMMUNE YOU: Elderberry is one of the most common herbs taken today to counter the effects of the common cold, flu, including a sore throat. Elderberries are a low-calorie food and supply anthocyanidins; powerful purple pigment compounds that act as antioxidants. High in vitamin C and dietary fiber, Elderberry can help support respiratory function.
Fennel Seed / DIGEST WELL: Fennel seeds are actually a fruit and have a mild licorice-like flavor. In ancient India, traditions and even to this day, Fennel seeds are eaten after meals to support digestion but are also packed with nutrition, especially Vitamin C, a critical water-soluble vitamin in support of immune health, tissue repair, and collagen synthesis.
Ginger Root / DIGEST WELL, INFLAM AWAY: Ginger Root, or rhizome, is the underground portion of the plant. In Ayurveda, Ginger is known as the wonder herb and has been used in various forms to aid in digestive support, reduction of nausea, and to help fight the common cold. Studies show that people suffering from joint inflammation saw a significant reduction of symptoms associated with their condition.
Holy Basil Leaf / STRESS LESS: Holy Basil, commonly referred to as Tulsi (the incomparable one), is not your common basil. It is considered by many to be a “tonic for the body” (the Queen of Herbs) and is used to help combat anxiety, stress, and other health conditions. Holy Basil has both a high therapeutic value and a high nutritious value as it contains Vitamin A and B, calcium, zinc, iron, and chlorophyll. As an adaptogen used in Ayurveda medicine, Holy Basil is thought to decrease pain, swelling, and associated inflammation.
Honey Granules / IMMUNE YOU: Honey Granules have the same health benefits as natural honey and contain a wide variety of vitamins, trace elements, and enzymes, and are a great source of flavor and natural sweetener.
Lavender Flower / STRESS LESS, INFLAM AWAY: Lavender is commonly used in aromatherapy but as an herb used in teas, it brings to the table, many health benefits. Lavender has been traditionally used to support a balanced mood, as well as to help soothe occasional stress and support sleep.
Lemon Balm Leaf / STRESS LESS: Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) comes from the mint family and has been traditionally used to soothe nerves, improve mood, help improve cognitive function, and to reduce everyday stress. It acts as a very mild sedative, is anti-spasmodic, and traditionally is used in teas to promote restful sleep. It also provides a bright, uplifting pleasant lemon flavor and aroma.
Lemon Peel / STRESS LESS, DIGEST WELL: Lemon Peel is full of bioactive compounds with numerous health benefits, packs a high fiber and Vitamin C content, and is used in traditional herbal medicine to support digestion. Lemon Peel is pungent, bitter, and warm, it was also identified in research studies to have powerful antibacterial properties and effectively fight common oral-disease-causing bacteria.
Mullein Leaf / IMMUNE YOU: Mullein Leaf is a common wildflower native to Europe and Asia but is also found in most areas of the world. Mullein contains active compounds including saponins, flavonoids, phenylethanoid glycosides, and iridoids, all of which have anti-inflammatory properties and may also bring to the table antioxidant properties. Traditionally used in herbal medicine as a soothing herb, Mullein also has been used to support the immune and respiratory systems.
Nutmeg Powder / INFLAM AWAY: Nutmeg although small in size, is rich in plant compounds (cyanidins, phenylpropanoids, terpenes, as well as several phenolic compounds) all acting as antioxidants helping to protect the cells from the damage caused by free radicals. Nutmeg is also rich in compounds call monoterpenes (sabinene, terpineol, pinene) making it an excellent anti-inflammatory candidate.
Orange Peel / IMMUNE YOU: Orange peel is used in traditional herbal medicine to support the digestive system. It is high in certain phytochemicals, flavonoids, and antioxidants as well as provides magnesium, calcium, copper, and Vitamins A, D, C. It also helps support the normal function in the chest and diaphragmatic region and aids in the regulatory effect on the immune system which can reduce the strain and stress on the body’s defense mechanism.
Peppermint Leaf / STRESS LESS, DIGEST WELL, INFLAM AWAY: Peppermint is native to Europe and Asia and is an aromatic herb in the mint family and is a cross between watermint and spearmint. Commonly used as a flavoring in breath mints, candies and other foods, the menthol in peppermint exhibits well-known cooling properties. In traditional herbal medicine, peppermint has been used to cool the body through the process of sweating which helps supports the respiratory system. Peppermint also helps support digestion by helping the digestive system relax.
Rosehip Fruit / IMMUNE YOU: Rosehip is the fruit of the rose plant. Oil extracted from the Rosehip is internationally known because it is high in polyunsaturated fats and supports a healthy skin membrane. As a traditional herbal remedy, it is high in disease-fighting antioxidants such as vitamin C, catechins, quercetin, and ellagic acid playing a vital role in supporting collagen synthesis and supporting overall immune health.
Thyme Leaf / INFLAM AWAY: Thyme, the familiar culinary herb, lesser-known however as an effective herbal antiseptic is comprised of two essential oils (thymol and carvacrol). Thyme is also an excellent source of vitamin C and a good source of vitamin A, both important contributors in supporting a healthy immune system while also impacting overall systemic inflammation.
Turmeric Root / INFLAM AWAY: Turmeric Root is one of the most widely studied herbs and for good reason. Turmeric contains compounds called curcuminoids, and the most common active ingredient is curcumin. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory and exhibits strong antioxidant properties that are so beneficial in protecting the body from the ravage of free radicals. Curcumin also addresses the low-level chronic inflammation that has been connected to so any health conditions.
